This websites purpose is to display the information we collected as a group, & to summarize our overall findings from our neighborhoods such as building age, Carbon Dioxide emissions, demographics, clean heating fuels, boilers, and more. The neighborhoods we anlyzed are Melrose, Pelham, Wakefield, & Belmont.
Melrose: Located in the southwestern part of the Bronx, Melrose houses around 29,300 residents. The primary zip code is 10451, and it is a unique neighborhood in the fact that there are more tobacco retailers prevalent just here than in the city at all. Furthermore, the demographics consist of 1.5% white, 27.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.8% Asian, and 0.7% of citizens that are from multiple races. Hispanic/Latino makes up a robust total of 69.1% of the population.
Pelham: Pelham is distinguished by it’s two primary postal codes - 10461 and 10462. The 10461 area comprises a white population, with a Hispanic population being present as well, but varying between 11 ~ 30%; overall nowhere near the white population. Also within this zip code, the Asian population remains minimal, practically under 20%. In the 10462 area, the white popluation does not surpass 40%, but the Hispanic population consistently increases over 50%. The black population is still in the single digits, but it sometimes reaches 11%.
Wakefield: Located above the Botanical Gardens & Bronx Zoo, Wakefield has a population of around 75,767, with an average age of 37. The area is predominantly black, with the demographic being 63.68%, and the median household income is $62,918, which is slightly below New York City’s average. Some housing options are single-family homes, multi-family houses, and apartments. 77% of the apartments are renter-occupied. The average house value is at aroind $495,000, and the rent for a one-bedroom apartment is approximately $1,400. In the 25,014 present households, 45% have marired couples, and 36% are female householders. Wakefield is in District 12 of the Bronx, and takes residents an average of 47 minutes to get to work. 31.3% of the population has a high school degree, and the dropout rate is only 5%.
Belmont: In Belmont, there’s a population of 176,000 people. About 62% are Hispanic, and 30% are black. As of 2022, about 36% of the population lives below the poverty line, and the median household income is $31,990. While Belmont is home to numerous college students from the nearby college, Fordham University, the rate of college-educated individuals is lower than the rest of the city. Furthermore, there are also higher rates of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure compared to the NYC averages. For housing, most people rent. Finally, the average rent for a 2 bedroom apartmnet is $2,300.
The New York City Clean Heat Program, led by the New York State Research & Development Authority, is determined to transform the city’s energy usage and improve air quality along with reducing carbon emissions. In order to do this, they would start to phase out harmful fuels like oil #4 & #6 by January 2030. The DEP Boiler Registration both monitors & improves the environmental performance, which in turn reduces air pollution. Furthermore, the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan coincides with plaNYC, as they are saving $250 million, and promoting eco-friendly options for buildings. Finally, initiatives like the Utility Rebate Program aim to increase clean-emission projects in buildings, which as a result should cut CO2 emissions by 40%, and have 70% of the city running on clean energy by 2030!
No. 4 & 6 fuels are derived from petroleum, and are used all throughout the heating system engines in the borough. We also analyzed the building age through our data, and were able to determine that the average building year is 1929. This is mostly shown in areas like Melrose or Wakefield, and raises health concerns due to the old materials that were used, as they could potentially cause respiratory issues like asthma, among others. Furthermore, the elevated MMBTU in Bronxdale may suggest the idea that there is a demand for heat when considering the population. Regardless, the high MMBTU also leads to multiple types of pollution such as Greenhouse Gas Emissions, land pollution from waste disposal, and chemical pollution.
